Mana’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused unprecedented upheaval to the tourism industry. As a hospitality startup that opened its doors less than a year ago, Mana is facing the challenge head-on and trying to survive these turbulent times. This article summarizes our response and next steps to the pandemic.

+ Impact on our operations and people

  • Most of our study tours and educational programs to be held at Mana this year have been canceled.
  • With limited business and dwindling cash reserves, expenses had to be cut. Mana staff proactively proposed that everyone takes an equal pay cut to keep all staff on a part-time basis. This was a touching moment for the management team and a testament to the staff’s commitment to and love for Mana. We are doing everything we can to keep all our staff so they don’t lose their income in these challenging times.

+ Our response

We drafted and implemented Mana’s response guidelines to keep our guests, employees and local communities safe and healthy. Our concern is not only about protecting our people, but more about decelerating the spread of the virus especially from reaching vulnerable segments, especially elders in the villages around us.

The guidelines specifically include disinfecting furniture in the restaurant and public areas every day, all staff taking temperatures every morning, wearing masks and washing hands every hour.

Surviving & Thriving

We’d like to reframe this crisis as an opportunity. In anticipation of the day that Mana can fully re-open, we are working on many fronts to be able to deliver even more transformational experiences for our guests. So instead of hibernating, we are:

  • improving our menu at Mana Kitchen

  • starting food delivery

  • completing our onsite store

  • launching our online store

  • maintaining and fixing our eco technologies

  • maintaining and fixing our eco villas for greater comfort

  • and working on some other surprise projects!
